The Florida Recycling Partnership Foundation hosted a free webinar on Friday, January 26 for its 2023 Recycling Champion Award Winners to showcase their innovative and successful programs.
Representatives from each organization presented their award-winning programs including:
1st Place: City of Orlando for its Multifamily Recycling Incentive
The Solid Waste Division for the City of Orlando presented its multifamily recycling program that includes various educational and communication strategies, such as the Recycling Incentives Program. This program aims to assist properties with implementing recycling initiatives, specifically low- to moderate-income (LMI) multifamily (MF) properties.
2nd Place: League of Women Voters of Orange County, Orange County, City of Orlando & City of Winter Park for their Intergovernmental Waste Reduction Program – Campaign Signs Recycling:
A group of Central Florida government agencies and non-profits joined forces to implement a waste diversion program focused on campaign signs. Through their efforts in 2020 and again in 2022, an innovative and successful waste reduction and recycling program was established.
3rd Place: City of Coral Springs for its Coral Springs Recycles Right! Campaign
After implementation of the Coral Springs Recycles Right! Campaign and Recycling Rewards program, contamination rates dropped in the city to less than 30%. This has allowed the city to continue its curbside recycling program.

Karl Berven to retire from Bealls.
Karl Berven, the Director of Corporate Services from Bealls, Inc. is retiring after a long, successful career in retail. His career began with Oregon-based retailer Fred Meyers Stores and advanced through store management. A business opportunity arose for Karl and his wife to work in Adelaide, South Australia, so they took the challenge to relocate there for three years. Upon returning to the Pacific Northwest, he
gained additional experience with Safeway Stores. In 1998, Karl was recruited to by Bradenton-based Bealls Inc., as Manager of Corporate Services and then move to the position of Director of Facilities & Corporate Services where he managed $23 million in annual utility expense, oversaw administration of waste & recycling services, and initiated robust sustainability practices. Karl served on the Florida Recycling Partnership Board for several years and we will miss his passion for recycling and sustainability as well as his positive attitude. Best wishes to Karl
